Modernist Furniture

I believe in creating functional art that respects the environment, ensuring every furniture piece is not only beautiful but also sustainable. We have a collection of established unique modernist designs which can be adapted to your requirements.

My Ethos

I am a furniture designer/maker specialising in the Modernist, Art Furniture style, based in Berwick upon Tweed, Northumberland.

My Father was also a furniture maker and teacher, and introduced me to furniture making and design. I was heavily influenced by the Danish school of the 1940’s - 70’s, particularly the work of Hans Wegner, Finn Juhl , The Bauhaus and other contemporary European and Far Eastern designer/makers. My interest was originally kindled in the 1970’s when I came across the work of James Krenov, who’s organic approach fascinated me and led me to experiment with more unusual timbers, such as spalted wood and focusing on the natural beauty of the timber.

I use both solid wood and veneered timber and try to recycle quality hardwoods when available.

Several of the pieces below saw previous service as the internal joinery of a 1920’s Midland Bank, a spiral staircase and even some Everest window sills.

New timber is sourced only from accredited suppliers. My construction methods include both machine and hand work, as appropriate, and combine traditional cabinet making techniques with more recent innovations, where they are beneficial. I follow the Danish style of oil finishes in most cases, which are both durable and easily refreshed if required.
